Adding a fire sprinkler system to your home or an apartment complex or condo is a big investment so it’s only logical that you would do some research on the subject before making the purchase. It’s important that you understand exactly what you’re investing in. That means knowing what information out there is true and what isn’t.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths out there about fire sprinkler systems. Here are a few of them:
Water Damage is as Bad as Potential Fire
Many people incorrectly believe that every sprinkler in an entire building will be set off by the smallest fire or even a false alarm. This leads people to believing that sprinklers will cause more damage than the fire itself. Neither of these are true. Sprinklers are very localized – in most cases, it will only take one or two sprinklers to put out a fire. As far as the damage goes – fires that burn out of control will cause far more of it and can even threaten the structural integrity of the building. Allowing a fire to burn until the fire department shows up will lead to extreme damage both from the fire and from the high-powered hoses.
Fire Alarms Will Protect me as Much as Sprinklers
Fire alarms keep occupants of a building safe by alerting them to fires quickly and, in the case of more modern alarms, notifying emergency personnel. But this does nothing to stop the fire. Sprinklers are a quick response that can stop the fire at best and, at worst, will reduce the heat and flames while occupants get out safely.
Sprinklers Aren’t Useful in the Winter
Some people who live in places where the temperature dips below freezing in the winter worry that their pipes will freeze too. Then, their thinking goes, the sprinklers will not work. Luckily, this is not actually an issue. Modern sprinklers have guidelines that prevent freezing from happening. Buildings in the coldest places in the world use sprinklers and yours can too!
